Purple Yam Soup Recipe
The Purple Yam Soup Recipe offers a delicious and hearty dish featuring grated purple yam and shrimp, showcasing the diverse and wonderful flavors found in American cuisine. Despite the common confusion with sweet potatoes, yams differ significantly in color, ranging from off-white to dark brown, and can weigh up to 100 lbs, making them a unique ingredient to explore. Purple yams, available fresh or frozen in Asian or African markets, add a vibrant touch to this recipe.
To prepare the soup, shrimp is peeled, deveined, and ground before being marinated with salt, black pepper, and green onions. This flavorful shrimp mixture is set aside for later use. The cooking process begins by boiling water in a soup pot, followed by the addition of purple yam. The yam is stirred into the boiling water and cooked until tender, creating a rich and starchy base for the soup.
Once the purple yam reaches the desired tenderness, the marinated shrimp is added to the pot, enhancing the soup with its savory and pink-colored contribution. The dish is seasoned with fish sauce and sugar, further elevating its taste profile. The finishing touches involve topping the soup with the remaining green onions and optional sweet basil leaves, providing additional freshness and aroma.
Served hot with rice, the Purple Yam Soup Recipe offers a delightful and comforting experience, bringing together the distinct flavors of grated purple yam and shrimp in a thick and rich soup—a perfect representation of the diverse culinary landscape found in America.
