Green Papaya Salad with Chicken Recipe
The Green Papaya Salad with Chicken Recipe is a delightful dish primarily composed of green papaya, chicken, and a handful of other flavorful ingredients, setting it apart from similar salads like Bok Lahong. Known as Yum Lahong in Khmer or Vietnamese Green Papaya salad, this recipe showcases a unique blend of textures and tastes.
To create the salad, shred 2 lbs of green papaya and mix it with 1 cup of shredded carrots, 2 cups of Thai basils, 1 cup each of mints and cilantro, and optionally, 1/4 cup of dried shrimp if using chicken. Roasted crushed peanuts and optional chili are added for garnish, providing a crunchy and spicy element to the salad.
The dressing for the Green Papaya Salad involves combining 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of fish sauce, 1 cup of water, minced garlic, and lime juice or vinegar. This mixture is heated on low until the sugar dissolves, and after cooling, the dressing is ready to enhance the salad’s flavors. The balance of sweet, salty, and tangy notes in the dressing can be adjusted according to taste preferences.
For the meat component, options include jumbo grilled shrimps or shredded cooked chicken. It is recommended to season the chicken and shrimp before grilling for added flavor. When ready to serve, mix the shredded green papaya, carrots, chicken, and grilled shrimp with the dressing gradually to avoid oversaturation. The herbs are then added, and the salad is topped with roasted crushed peanuts. Dried shrimp can be included if soaked and washed beforehand. This vibrant and flavorful salad is traditionally served with dried beef jerky.
In conclusion, the Green Papaya Salad with Chicken Recipe offers a refreshing and unique take on traditional salads, combining the crispness of green papaya with the savory elements of chicken and grilled shrimp. The dressing, herbs, and garnishes contribute to a well-rounded and delicious dish that reflects the culinary diversity of Southeast Asian cuisine.
