Indonesian Turmeric Rice Recipe

Indonesian Turmeric Rice Recipe is a quick and tasty way to prepare rice with a golden hue and a fragrant aroma. This recipe uses Basmati rice, which is simmered in coconut milk, turmeric, and lemongrass. The rice also gets a boost of flavor from pandan leaves, bay leaves, and salt.

To make Indonesian Turmeric Rice Recipe, you need to wash the rice well until the water is clear. Then, transfer the rice to a rice cooker and add the coconut milk, water, turmeric powder, pandan leaves, lemongrass, bay leaves, and salt. Choose the “white rice” setting on the rice cooker and let the rice cook until it is tender.

When the rice is done, discard the pandan leaves, lemongrass, and bay leaves. Then, use a fork to fluff the rice and make it fluffy. Indonesian Turmeric Rice Recipe can be enjoyed as a simple meal or paired with various Indonesian dishes, such as satay, rendang, or ayam goreng.


2 cups of basmati rice
1.5 cup of Ayam brand coconut milk
1.5 cup of water
1 tablespoon of turmeric powder
2 pandan leaves, knotted
1 stalk of lemon grass, bruised
2 bay leaves
2 teaspoon of salt

Directions to make Indonesian Turmeric Rice Recipe

  1. Rinse basmati rice several times till water runs clear. Drain well in a colander.
  2. Place grains, coconut milk, water and spices into the rice cooker.
  3. Select ‘white rice’ function and cook till rice is done.
  4. Remove pandan leaves, lemongrass and bay leaves.
  5. Fluff up the rice before serving.
